Killer Feeling

This was for another jam with my artists in crime Liquid and Skills. The subject was mine to pick this time. I loved Killer Instinct back in my Super Nintendo days, and the videos for the new one have me hyped to see what they come up with all these years later. They haven't previewed Fulgore yet, my favorite character, so why no draw him to get my fix? And seeing some other renditions is icing on the cake.

C-C-C-C-Combo Breakerrrrrr!!!!!!!!!!

This Hulk is Red

I've been drawing for as long back as I can remember. I remember drawing stick men with capes shooting eye beams at each other. I remember drawing the same He-Man character over and over and over because I just thought I drew him well. I remember drawing comics on that wide rolled printer paper that I stole on the last day of fifth grade. And so much more. But I don't have a single memory in all those youthful years of coloring anything I drew. Nothing. It's always been my biggest Achilles heel.

It's time to grow.

May The Force Be With You

The jams with Liquid and Skills continue! The goal this time was to draw an X-Force team of five members of our choosing. I admittedly have not read the comic in a long time, but snippets keep coming up in my Tumblr feeds. I went with mostly old school characters and tried to make a truly deadly team. A soldier, a psychic, a strong guy, a ninja, and..Domino. For old times sake.

It felt good completing this one as I haven't done anything outside of sketchy for a while. I really wasn't prepared for the madness that is fitting 5 characters on one page. I get to pick the next subject, and it will be a break compared to this. Awesome fun on this.

Pure Kaine

This was for an impromptu jam with my fellow artists Liquid and Skills. We each had to pick a different version of Spidey, so I chose the Scarlet Spider. I didn't know too much about the character prior to researching him for this, but he's pretty bad@$$. Definitely check out the other parts of this jam to see some manga and some 2099 goodness!

Past Due..

This is what I see coming from a hypothetical time when Phoenix and Black Bolt got it on!

A few months ago some fellow artists (Liquid and Skills) and I agreed to start doing some jams together to get out artistic juices flowing. Unfortunately I slept on the last one, the topic being to draw an offspring of two existing characters. I had actually drawn one at the time, Daredevil's and Elektra's child complete with a DiDi on her shirt, but it felt and looked unoriginal and never made it online. So all these months later during a Starbucks session with Liquid we decided to finally do it right and get the jams started again, so here you go.

I picked these characters because I thought it'd be tight to see Black Bolt's scream channeled through the Phoenix Force, so here it is.

Check out the other sides of this jam here:

Officer Luci

This was inspired by a new acquaintance that told me she wanted to be a police office in the future. It turned out more cartoony than my usual stuff, but I winded up being happier with it like this.

She'll Get Mad if I Put Her Name Here

I had a request from a friend of mine to draw her as a super hero. She's short and feisty, that makes Wolverine the obvious choice here. I threw her car and cigarettes in for that personal touch, as well as here custom cell phone holder. You can't hide a five inch phone in there...

It's a Slow Process, But I Ain't Got Nothing But Time

I've been of fan of Mario Chavez for a while now, and I'm always impressed by his use of Copic markers for his commissions. He seems to only use cool and warm grays to achieve an entire range of tones, good enough to fool your eyes into seeing colors that aren't really there. I too only use these grays (six dollar markers add up fast!) for my pics, so I'm trying to channel that style a little here.

I also thought it'd be cool to see the different stages my stuff goes through before it hits the interwebz, so here's the pencils and inks.

If you're feeling my style, my rates are cheap haha!

Thanos

This pic all started because I wanted to use my markers and my white gel pen on something.  The only Copics I own at the moment are warm and cool grays  but they're so versatile, and especially on a color scheme like this, and Thanos' eyes being just white specks most of the time lend themselves well to the gel pen.

A Looney Trek

I go to Starbucks pretty frequently after work, both to wait out the traffic and to focus more than I can at home. One of the baristas there who always sees me with the pad asked if I could draw something for her. I of course asked "Who's your favorite character," and these three came out. I don't think she was expecting them all in one pic, but the Reading Rainbow theme had just been stuck in my head a few days earlier, so...

It's Pucca I Think?

This was a pseudo-going away gift from me to my employer of the last 8 years, a sketch for my manager's daughter of her favorite characters.  I'm pretty unfamiliar with the Pucca phenomenon, so I hope I did the characters well.  It's odd that there's a ninja cartoon The Graphitist is unfamiliar with, so maybe with my time off I'll check it out.

Of course with all this free time coming up, I may just have time to draw YOU something, drop me line!

Renaissance

I just can't stay away from those Ninja Turtles...

As much as I've drawn them throughout my life, it's fitting that Leo was the subject.  I wanted to do something all digital without the familiar comfort of a pencil and pen in my hand, and I wanted to color it and really just experiment with taking a piece further than my usual sketches.

Zonin' Like a Ronin

It's been a long Spring for The Graphitist.  You wouldn't know it by reading this blog (haha) but I've actually kept pretty busy on the art side of things. One big focus was knowing me and the rest of the FR crew would be attending Heroes Con in Charlotte.  It's been almost two weeks since I returned, and I have a lot of thoughts on it (upcoming in a new post,) but for tonight I'm reflecting on the frame of mind I've been in lately.

I had initially been up and down my first week back. Now, for reasons I have yet to figure out, I have been tuning in a lot more than usual when I'm on the pad.  More often than not after a day of work I skip the traffic and go to a Starbucks to get some drawing time in, and my mind has been a lot...emptier for lack of a better word.  I still take my breaks, check my phone, and watch the people, but when a pen is in my hand I just seem to zone out and focus more than usual.  The pressure of creating something perfect and the inevitable thoughts of where this hobby of mine will take me have temporarily disappeared.  I'm taking that as a good thing.

The pic above is from a few days ago, and, while it's not any better technically than what I've been drawing, it felt better when it was completed. I'm taking that as a good thing too...

Peace!

Boredom Creates..

I started this sketch during a graduation ceremony a few weeks ago in my little Moleskine sketchbook, and have been inking it here and there since, usually when I haven't been feeling other drawings I'm working on.

Black Widow

This is a post-job sketch I did recently.  Much like Natasha I want to move on from my past, and into a future of constant updates.

I'm Not Dead Yet..

...but the process may get me yet.

I've been working on an awesome comic project recently, and the deadline is quickly coming up over the horizon.  My time lately has been devoted towards that, hence the lack of fresh Graphiti.    But just to prove I'm still exercising the right brain, here's some layouts from the current page.

I'd love to chat more, but like Biggie said, I got a story to tell.

Champloo Jam

What a fun piece to draw! This was for a jam with some fellow artists, all orchestrated by the cuz (check out his piece here and to link to the rest) with some great results! I will definitely be putting more time in on this one and give it a proper scan soon.

Hulk!

So it's official, I have to draw the Hulk every time I watch the Avengers.  Marvel really hit a home run with that one.  With all of their origins already out of the way in their solo movies, they can get right into the action.  And we all showed up for the Hulk more than anything right?

Just Horsing Around...

I've never ridden a horse.

That's not completely true.  I have a very vague memory of being on the back of one in my early early years, feeling in control and completely oblivious to the trained handler guiding me around.  But I've never truly ridden, never felt that rush of wind or the connection I imagine most riders feel.

I've also not tried drawing one in a long, long time.  To break up the monotony of my usual artistic endeavors I thought I'd break out of my comfort zone and try something newish.  I very rarely draw from life anymore (which is probably the most terrible thing an artist can say,) so it felt good to flex a little and get some quick sketches out.

I'm going back to the comfort zone now...

A Short Break

So I've been working on some layouts for an upcoming comic project lately, pretty much all I've been doing really.  To try and stay disciplined I told myself that'd be all I'd focus on, but I still sneak random sketches in to break things up now and then.  Nothing gets between TheGraphitist and his pad (analog or digital.)

I've been using Sketchbook Pro on a Windows 8 tablet (do yourself a favor and just get a Note 10.1), and this was a loose sketch that'll probably go all the way..just waiting for the next break.

Spider Fight

It's been a while since I had an update.  This wasn't drawn too recently, maybe a month ago?  Between various sketchbooks, papers, and programs, I'm having a hard time keeping up with what's what.  And that's not a bad thing at all..

Peace!
